The Lifesaving Rules

The aim of the Lifesaving Rules is to highlight the core risks associated with working on the railway and to prevent serious harm to the workforce.

Developing the Rules

The rules were developed after Network Rail research, which covered the entire industry over the last 12 years, showed us where people’s lives were most at risk.

This helped to identify six areas where employees and contractors were at risk of having a life-changing or fatal injury. Over 1,300 people within Network Rail helped in writing the Rules, as well as contractors, unions, other companies where Lifesaving Rules had made people safer.
